Final project - reduce, reuse, recycle
My assignment was to create a final IDEA assignment: Reduce, Reuse or Recycle items to help reduce our impact on the environment. Every day we use items that are meant to be thrown away. My challenge was to take these items (and any you can make in the lab) to create a project that will lessen the amount of these items going into our landfills. I may use any of the equipment in the Innovation Center. My partner was Rene Merk. After brainstorming and researching, we decided to make a clock.
This is an idea we saw online that made is interested in using CD's and vinyl to make a clock.
vinyl record background
We used Illustrator to design a background that will go on the vinyl record. We used the vinyl cutter machine to cut out the design in 2 separate colors that we layered to get a multi-color print.
We weeded and prepared the print for application.
Cd numbers
We used Illustrator and the vinyl cutter again to make the numbers that will attach to the backs of the CD's.
clock hand
We used Inventor to design the clock hands and 3D printed them. First I measured the diameter of the gear box we had to know the dimensions of the circle that the hands will attach to. This allowed me to create the Inventor file to the right dimension.
We designed separate hour and minute hands to be different lengths.
Once the files were finished we followed the 3D printing steps and exported it to makerbot before taking it to the 3D printer.
putting it all together
THE FINAL PRODUCT
what i learned
This project was very beneficial and I learned a lot. I especially learned how to use multiple machines to create different parts to create one final product. Often times one machine will not do everything. I was able to use my creativity to think of my own project and come up with something that is unique to me. I strengthened my knowledge on using the vinyl cutter and the 3D printer. I had to problem solve and adjust when things didn't go exactly like I wanted, which are great life skills to have. This project was my favorite out of all the creations in IDEA class.
